Underdogs vs Bobcats

WITH the top five teams in the men’s 1st Division competition playing against the bottom five teams this weekend, there is a distinct possibility the current five-point gap between fifth and sixth positions could become even greater.

The most intriguing battle is this afternoon’s clash at High Street between Woolgoolga and reigning premier Maclean.

A fortnight ago some football pundits were declaring Maclean over the line in the race to the 2010 title but two losses in a row sees the Bobcats looking vulnerable as they slip back to the field.

While starting as underdogs, Woolgoolga’s younger brigade possess the leg speed that could trouble Maclean.

If they can keep possession of the ball with clean, crisp passing an upset may be on the cards.

Sawtell has shown plenty of improvement of late and will be hoping their better form can continue tomorrow when they face Coffs Coast Tigers at Polwarth Drive.

On paper Urunga should be too strong for Orara Valley but the Dingoes have already shown this season they are up for a fight.

Playing on their home turf at ‘Uluru’ is another factor in Orara’s favour that Urunga will need to overcome.

Coffs United’s charge towards the top four should continue this afternoon at Yamba while Northern Storm play host to Boambee tomorrow in a clash that could produce several goals.

Time for a win

BOTH Northern Storm and Coffs Coast Tigers will be eyeing off their first win of the season when they meet each other this afternoon at Korora in women’s 1st Division.

The Storm will head into the clash as favourites but the sniff of first points for the year will motivate both teams.

The match of the day will be at Corindi where the Breakers play host to local rivals Woolgoolga.

The form of Corindi has been patchy in 2010 while the Wildcats have swept all before them before playing Urunga last week.

Home-ground advantage should mean that Urunga prove too strong for Sawtell while a three-game winning streak will end for either Coffs United or Boambee. The catch-up game between Urunga and Woolgoolga will be played on Tuesday night at Nambucca Heads.
