Under 18s thrashed at trials

COACH Peter Barrett was left feeling deflated after Group 2 under-18s were thrashed in both their matches at the Oxley Pioneers selection trials at Tamworth on Saturday.

In Group 2’s first match the opponents were Group 4 who had already been done over by southern neighbours Group 3 and after trailing 22-0 at the break, a step up in defence stopped a total washout with the final score 36-0.

There was some improvement in the last hit-out but opponent Group 3 was dominant, winning 34-10.

“The format didn’t suit us but when you think about it, what you put in is what you get out of it,” Barrett said.

“Sure, we played badly but with two training runs in preparation it’s not good enough.

“We need to get together well in advance, otherwise we’re a long way from competitive.”

Only Mitch Dockrey and Steve Goodwin of Woolgoolga made it into the Pioneers side to contest the first round of the Country Rugby League championships in Muswellbrook.

The squad will train at Walcha on Good Friday.
