Renault's 164kW ultimate Clio R.S.

LIMITED EDITION: 220 Trophy tops the Clio R.S. range for power and performance, but sets you back $39,990.

AS sure as the sun rises in the morning, you can rely on Renault to introduce a new limited edition model to its line-up not long after the last.

No bad thing of course, especially when said limited edition pumps 164kW of power through a little Clio's front wheels.

Known as the Clio R.S. 220 Trophy (the 220 bit relating to 220 horsepower from its 1.6-litre turbo four-cylinder), it costs a rather eyebrow-raising $39,990 and joins the Sport, Cup, Sport Premium and Cup Premium Clio R.S. line-up. Plenty to choose from then.

A rather neat 220 limited edition, examples have gone on sale in Australia this week and Clio R.S shoppers may succumb to the up-sell tempters the 220 Trophy offers.

Compared to the Clio R.S. 200 EDC ($29,490) there's an extra 15kW of power and 20Nm more torque (40Nm more in 4th and 5th gear) courtesy of new engine mapping, a larger turbo, new intake system and revised exhaust.

The limited edition cars also get revised EDC six-speed dual-clutch autos (no manual versions are available); with gear changes up to 30% faster and down changes sharpened thanks to reduced steering wheel paddle travel.

Living up to the Trophy heritage, the Clio R.S. 220 has a faster steering rack and some chassis tweaks, sitting 20mm lower at the front and 10mm lower out back, and featuring stiffer dampers coupled with hydraulic bump stops.

A new hero body colour arrives - Frost White matte - and is available exclusively with gloss black roof, while the car rides on new 18-inch wheels. Inside, owners receive carbon-look trim details and heated leather sports seats. Trophy badging - to remind others this is no ordinary R.S. - is seen on the front spoiler and door trims, while the door sills are individually numbered.

Australia is the second highest selling market globally for the current Clio R.S. (more than 1400 have been sold since the late 2013 launch), and Renault Australia is confident this limited edition range expander will be highly sought after by our ever-eager performance Frenchie fans.
