Two Mackay cricketers get a crack at Knott

CRICKET: Three Mackay girls are set to compete alongside 48 of the best young cricketers in the state after being selected for the 2019 Under 17 Female State Challenge.

Ella Anderson and Ryleigh Wotherspoon will compete at the same tier as Charli Knott, who joined the Brisbane Heat WBBL team last year.

Four teams have been named for the Challenge, with each of our champions picked into a different squad.

Valley allrounder Knott, who also made her debut for the Konica Minolta Queensland Fire this season, will captain the Sparks team.

Anderson will play for team Flash while Wotherspoon is the wicket-keeper for Ember.

To be held at the Sunshine Coast from April 7-10, the girls will have the chance to jump into the under-18 female squad to participate in an extensive training program.

Former Australian Southern Stars and South Australian Redbacks coach Mark Sorell will coach one of the teams while ex-Queensland Fire and WBBL Brisbane Heat coach Andy Richards, who recently returned from a stint with the Pakistan women's team, will coach another.

The teams include recent Australian under-15 squad selections Mikayla Wrigley (Sunshine Coast), Sianna Ginger (Townsville) and Goondiwindi allrounder Meg Mettam who plays Premier cricket for Sandgate-Redcliffe.

Knott began her New Zealand tour on Saturday with the Australian under-19 women's team alongside fellow Queenslanders Josie Dooley and Courtney Sippel.
