TWO people being treated at Grafton Base Hospital following a seven car pile-up north of Ulmarra are in a stable condition and may be released this evening.

Emergency services raced to the scene of this morning's crash just north of the Ulmarra ferry crossing about 11am, and arrived to find seven vehicles with varying degrees of damage.

Grafton Highway Patrol Sergeant Jarrod French said early investigations indicated three southbound vehicles on the Pacific Hwy, including a B-Double, a four-wheel-drive towing a Jayco campervan, and a Lexus sedan, were stopped in a queue due to roadworks.

"A short time later, a black Volkswagen Transporter has collided into the rear of the Lexus, and pushed the Lexus into back of the car with the campervan," Sergeant French said.

"The camper trailer has then lifted up into the air and come down, crashing on top of vehicle it was towing and on the transporter van."

The impact pushed the Lexus into the northbound lane of the highway, leaving a north-bound rigid truck with nowhere to go but into the front of the sedan.

Another Volkswagen Transporter suffered minor damage when it clipped the rigid truck.

All up, seven vehicles were involved.

As a result of the crash, the occupants of the Lexus sedan, believed to be an elderly couple, were transported to Grafton Base Hospital for treatment.

The Pacific Highway remained closed for more than an hour as the vehicles were cleared from the road, although diversions were in place to allow traffic flow.

Sergeant Jarrod French added that the crash was still under investigation.

Witnesses not yet spoken to are asked to phone Grafton police on 6642 0222.
