Twins prepare for challenge of Prep

IT WILL be a little bit more emotional for Mackay mum Thea Gonnella to send her boys off to school today.

Her twins, Hamish and Noah, have severe haemophilia, a genetic condition that means their blood doesn't clot.

In Australia, there is only one other set of identical twins with haemophilia and Hamish and Noah are the only set in Queensland.

"They will be like every other kid, they will fall over, they will scratch themselves and cut themselves," Mrs Gonnella said.

"You just have to manage the injuries."

As well as treating any bumps, nicks or marks with ice straight away, the boys also receive injections every second day.

It takes about an hour to give them their medication.

"It can be stressful," Mrs Gonnella said.

"I haven't been able to work full-time because there are times when we have to go back to the hospital.

"But they are used to it now. They are like royalty at the hospital - all the nurses know them and say hello."

While being identical and haemophiliacs means that Hamish and Noah are certainly unique, there was no difference in the way they raced and played with the other children at Fitzgerald State School.

They are in good company there, as the school has welcomed three other sets of twins as well.

"They are best friends," Ms Gonnella said.

"Something that is special is that they will go through their major milestones together."
