Up-front taxi fares touted

TWEED taxi drivers may soon be able to say “show me the money” to passengers before they drive away.

The New South Wales Government has introduced a trial in which taxi passengers would pay an up-front fare to help prevent the problem of passengers refusing to pay the fare at the end of a trip.

The Transport Minister said the trial would be introduced on the state's central coast and if successful, could be introduced more broadly.

Tweed Heads Coolangatta Taxi Service manager Murray Spence said the trial was welcome news.

“It's a good idea and will help with problems we are experiencing,” Mr Spence said.

“It will help the drivers and the passengers.”

The manager of Tweed Taxis in Murwillumbah, Ken O'Grady, said the idea of paying an up-front fare was one that had already been put to use in the Tweed area.

“We can give people a quote of how much the ride will cost,” Mr O'Grady said.

“It works well especially for large jobs and it means there are no complications at the end of the ride.

“It makes it easier and I don't have any problems with it.”

Mr O'Grady said he believed the decision would come down to driver preference.

“This is not something I can see them legislating but I think it will be up to the driver.

“It is hard enough to make a living in this industry without slashing the fares.

“But I do think it should be the decision of the driver.”
