Northern AFL turning up the heat

PROOF that places north of Sydney are more than just a developing area for AFL was revealed this week when the Northern Heat won three of their six games at the 2009 AFL (NSW/ACT) Under-18 State Zone Trials.

On Thursday night the team that boasted six players from the Coffs Coast accounted for Sydney-based teams the Pioneers and Pigeons.

The three-day carnival was being used as a selection aid for the State team or the Academy Development Squad.

While all six local boys made contributions throughout the team's six matches, the efforts of Sawtell duo Simon Taylor and Jack Gillingham was certainly noticed by selectors.

The fact that the pair was members of the Under-16 State Squad last year will certainly hold them in good stead.

Selection of the 40-player State Squad will be finalised within the next fortnight.
