Truckies sceptical Truck Central will benefit them

CONSTRUCTION of the $13.3 million Road Train Assembly Area is nearing completion at the new Truck Central Estate in the Northern Territory, with the last of more than 1000 truckloads of concrete being poured.

The Assembly Area is a key component of the $52million Truck Central development, which "will be an extremely valuable asset improving both safety and productivity for the road transport industry”, NT Road Transport Association executive officer Louise Bilato said.

Truckies were a bit sceptical that it would benefit them.

Terry Elkin said, "That's all great 'til the locals start parking there then poor old interstate operators can't get in. Happens at all these new truck stops.”

Bruce Skelton reckoned the grey nomads and backpackers would love it.

Chris Hosken suggested a ticketing system like in carparks - free parking providing you're actually using the facilities in one form or another would be suitable.

"Regardless of where I camp for the night and use showers and toilets, I always try and buy something from the shop,” he said.
