Truck 'jacked' for tyres

WHILE washing a truck in the backyard of their Grafton home on Sunday, the phone rang and Sharron and Paul Daniel were delivered some shocking news.

Another of their trucks, parked at the Grafton Truck and Trailer Repairs compound in South Grafton, was left on jacks after having both its front wheels removed.

Mrs Daniel, the owner of Daniel and Son Road Transport, described the brazen theft of the wheels, worth more than $6000, which occurred between 4pm on Saturday and Sunday morning, as “unbelievable”.

“We work really, really hard and long hours to earn a living,” she said.

“It’s just pathetic that it could be someone from the same industry and they would know how hard it is.”

Mrs Daniel said they arranged to park the truck at the fenced-off compound

because it was secure. But this did not stop the perpetrators, who cut through the perimeter fence, broke into another of the Daniels’ trucks to remove the jack, jacked up the $150,000 Kenworth prime mover and stole the wheels.

“It appears they had a ute backed up to the fence and have rolled the wheels down and into the back of the ute,” she said.

Grafton Truck and Trailer Repairs owner Laurie Bacchettr said he had only experienced the theft of UHF radios or CBs from trucks in the yard.

It appeared the thieves knew what they wanted and targeted the Daniels’ truck for its expensive tyres and rims. Anybody with any information on the theft can call Grafton police on 6642 0222.
