Truck driver killed in fatal highway crash

A MAN died overnight when his truck left the Pacific Highway north of Kempsey and struck a tree.

The crash happened on Monday about 11pm when the northbound pantech truck ran off the road, down an embankment and hit the tree, near Stuarts Point Rd, about 30km north of Kempsey.

A passing truck driver alerted emergency services but the driver - a 66-year-old man from Queensland - had already died at the scene.

Traffic was disrupted for several hours while investigations were undertaken and the wreckage cleared.

A report is being prepared for the NSW Coroner.
