Tribute for Rys

I WAS saddened to read of Rys Herzig's death.

I met Rys once, February 23, when we both attended the inaugural King/Queen Scout dinner in Sydney.

Rys had put in a monumental effort to attend the dinner - the idea of which he enthusiastically supported.

That was the weekend of the floods.

He had driven as far as Nambucca and was cut off by water covering the Pacific Hwy.

With no other route south open, the only alternative was to fly.

He got one of the last seats from Coffs in the late afternoon.

The flight was delayed leaving Coffs and had to circle Sydney due to the rotten weather there.

Arriving in Sydney, he hired a car and drove to Pennant Hills, arriving at the dinner late but in time to enjoy this unique event.

I had only a short time to enjoy talking to Rys but am certain his determination, ideals and enthusiasm must have been shared with many of those he led in both scouting and cadets.

Vale!
