TAYLOR Swift has been trending on social media ever since she announced the dates for her '1989' tour.

Excited fans took to Twitter using the hashtag #The1989WorldTour to tweet about the announcement.

Among them was Canadian musician Shaun Mendes who had been named as the supporting act for Swift's North American shows.

 

 

Aussie singer-songwriter Vance Joy was also named as Swift's supporting act.

Closer to home, Australian comedians Hamish and Andy also hit the top of Facebook's trend list when they announced they were returning to radio.

The radio personalities announced their return to the national Drive slot (4-6pm weekdays) from July 2015 by posting a video on their Instagram account.

 

 

And most recently, Melbourne Cup was trending but not for celebratory reasons.

The death of two horses following Tuesday's race sparked an outpouring on social media.

As news broke of Melbourne Cup favourite Admire Rakti's acute heart failure minutes after the race and later, seventh-placed Araldo being euthanised after breaking its leg kicking a fence on the way back to its stall, Twitter was flooded with tweets using the hashtags #MelbourneCup, #AdmireRakti and #Araldo.

Many expressed sadness at their tragic passing while others debated the cruelty of the sport.
