Trainer hopes seasoned jockey can fire at Corbould Park

RACING: Sunshine Coast trainer David Vandyke hopes experienced jockey Damian Browne can help race favourite Miss Powder Keg overcome a wide draw at Corbould Park on Tuesday.

The four-year-old mare has got an outside gate for the 1400m trip in the Furphy Handicap.

But Vandyke suggested she deserves to be among the top chances.

"I expect her to be hard to beat,” he said.

"She's obviously going to need some luck from the bad barrier. However, we've got leading rider Damian Browne aboard so hopefully that will offset the bad barrier and she'll come out on top.”

Miss Powder Keg has placed six times in seven starts and was rated a $2.10 chance yesterday by bookmaker Ladbrokes.

"She always performs on good tracks and ... there's the breeding and there's the jockey, so she ticks a few boxes,” Vandyke said.

She finished third as a relatively short-priced favourite in her last start at Ipswich a month ago but Vandyke believed she showed enough that day to suggest she will be a threat in the Ratings 58 race on the Sunshine Coast.

"She didn't have a lot of luck and found the line okay. She was picking up late and that was only 1100m so I think at 1400m she'll be hitting the line strong and will be hard to beat.”

There are seven races on the card at Corbould Park today but Miss Powder Keg is Vandyke's only runner.

His last runner at the track was successful, with Whoboughtazou scoring in a 1200m sprint on Sunday.

The Sunshine Coast's leading trainer, Stuart Kendrick, has five runners nominated for the meeting, including the favourites in the Benchmark 80 race over 1000m.
