Toyota Camry to get some spunk for 2018

SPORTY Toyota Camry. That has typically been an oxymoron.

But Toyota delivered one of the surprise packets of the Detroit motor show today with the next Camry - due in Australia by the end of this year.

All 2018 Camrys will be built in Japan following the end of Australian manufacturing nigh.

The edgier styling comes courtesy of a longer wheelbase (the distance between front and rear wheels), along with a lower roof and bonnet lines and a wider body. Deeper pressed panels have also been introduced for the the sportier appearance, with 17, 18 and 19 inch wheel options.

Three engine choices will be available, a four-cylinder petrol, petrol-electric hybrid and V6 petrol. A sports model with a stylish body kit will also be in the showroom.

Leading the powertrain charge is a new V6 petrol mated to an eight-speed automatic gearbox - two more cogs than previously available.

Toyota says the upgraded Hybrid Synergy Drive system "is more powerful as well as being smoother and quieter”. The base model will remain with Toyota's tried and tested 2.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine.

All new Camrys will sit on the Toyota New Generation Architecture (TNGA) platform.

Touted to improve handling and ride comfort with a lower centre of gravity, Toyota promises it will feature higher torsional rigidity and fully independent rear suspension.

Interior changes will see a move to more soft-touch surfaces, more supportive seats, while there will also be an 8-inch audio display screen, 7-inch colour multi-information display for the driver, 10-inch colour head-up display and an electronic park brake instead of the foot-operated pedal.
