Heartbreak towns unlucky in love

UNLUCKY in love, Bellingen, Nambucca Heads and Kempsey are home to more divorcees and jilted lovers than most other places in NSW.

Byron Bay is officially the "heartbreak capital of NSW" according to the latest Census information, but it's followed closely in second, third and fourth by the trio of Mid North Coast towns.

One in five Byron residents or 18% of the population over 15 years declared their relationship status as divorced or separated, according to national media analysis.

In Bellingen the remorse and regret of relationship failure could be just as evident.

The Australian Bureau of Statistics figures show 17% of all adult Bellingen residents are 'divorced' or 'separated.'

Nambucca recorded a divorcee and separated single rate of 16.4% and Kempsey 15.4%.

Commenting on the findings, North Coast-based psychologist Kieran Riordan said coastal towns often harbour lonely hearts and divorcees looking to "find their feet" after relationship break-ups.

But as one Coffs Coast divorcee said the findings might have an upside.

"The odds should then be in our favour of meeting that someone special here on the coast."
