Tourism high on agenda for council candidates

TOURISM will be a priority on the agenda of Coffs Harbour City Council, if two candidates for the September elections have their way.

It's the first time in the Coffs Coast Tourism Association's history that both the chairperson and vice-chairperson are running for council, and George Cecato and Fiona Barden are planning to put tourism at the forefront if elected.

Mr Cecato said tourism is a major contributor to the local economy.

“The importance of this industry is often overlooked,” Mr Cecato said.

“We want tourism to be a priority for the incoming councillors, and if this means running for council then that's what I will do.”

Fiona Barden, who is also a director on the Mid North Coast Tourism Board, is passionate about representing the tourism industry at the local government level.

“As the owner of a tourist attraction on the Coffs Coast, my business relies on the destination being a main focus on the agenda of council,” Ms Barden said.

“Tourism is everybody's business and I see that I can represent our core tourism operators at this level.”

Council candidates are invited to meet members of the tourism industry at 5.30pm on Tuesday, August 26, at the Coffs Ex-Services Club. If you would like to attend, contact Tracey Adendorff on 66517766 for details.
