Top two to tango at this weekend's premier contests
IT'S suddenly conceivable both Urunga Raiders and Coffs United Lions will arrive at the play-offs with an unbeaten record in men's premier league.
The pair fought out a 1-1 thriller midweek and the intensity suggests there are few teams (if any) at a current stage of development able to mount a challenge.
Ben Mackay opened the register for the Lions and the scoreboard showed 1-0 until deep into the second half when Kale Hopper levelled with a penalty.
Urunga finished with 10 men after Dom Ramirez-Kelly was red-carded late in the session but not for the first time, the premiers demonstrated their uncanny ability to come back from the precipice.
"We almost had them," Mackay said on North Coast Football Facebook.
However, two other results added spice to discussions as to which of the aspirant clubs will rise to the challenge.
A double to Mark Ifrah helped Coffs Coast Tigers upset Boambee 4-3 and confirm suspicions the Bombers have found themselves in a mid-season slump.
However, the biggest shock was Northern Storm's return to form to deliver a 6-2 thumping of Sawtell and put a hiccup in the Scorpions' so far smooth run under the radar.
This weekend, it's unlikely the top two will taste defeat, although Sawtell will throw everything at Urunga in their meeting at Toormina.
The pick of the round is at Ayrshire Park where home side Boambee gets a once-only opportunity to revive their season and prove Thunder's big win on Wednesday night was just one of those things.
