Top tips to make sure you stay healthy over Christmas break
DOCTORS are asking Queenslanders to avoid putting the "silly" in the silly season by following a few simple steps this Christmas.
AMA Queensland President Dr Shaun Rudd said people should have fun but not ruin the party for themselves or others by overindulging.
"As the old saying goes, eat, drink and be merry but please don't overdo it," Dr Rudd said.
"The key is to use a bit of commonsense and be safe.
"With a little planning and a few precautions, you can stay in good health, relax and recharge your batteries ready for 2015."

1. Count your drinks - There are 4,000 alcohol related injuries treated at Queensland hospital emergency departments every year. Most occur at home and they spike over Christmas and New Year. And no, modern medicine hasn't invented a fool-proof hangover cure, so all the more reason to moderate.
2. Leave the stuffing to the turkey - Splurging a little is OK but eating too much of anything is not good for you. Many people will put on a little weight over the festive season. Remember though, losing it again is always much harder.
3. No festive season food poisoning - Wash your hands thoroughly before preparing food and don't use the same utensils for raw and cooked meats. Enjoy your leftovers but make sure they aren't left out in the sun or kept too long.
4. Keep an eye out - Watch out for your kids, especially around water. More than 40 per cent of drownings occur over summer. It's easy to get distracted over the holidays and that can have tragic consequences.
5. Make realistic resolutions - Losing weight is the most popular New Year's resolution but the key is consistent daily effort and a balanced diet. Ditch the fad diets - your GP can give you tailored advice to get you safely started on a healthier lifestyle and keep you on track.
6. Get a check-up in 2015 - Regular health checks and tests with your GP can help find problems before they start and identify issues early, when your chances for treatment are better. It's like getting your car serviced before it breaks down.
