Top four tussle fires up ahead of break

Cricket's end of year top four is as unpredictable as the weather after the opening day of Division 1 Round 17 set up opportunities for the main contenders to shine.

Play was disrupted only at Maroochydore and Glasshouse by rain, and even then complete first innings were possible after the home sides were sent in by wary visitors.

At Kev Hackney Oval, Maroochydore may have lost about 20 overs of play in an extended day against Caloundra, but skipper Blaine Schloss would have no complaints after his Swans walked off with 258 in the bank.

Opener Callum Stitt provided the bulk of the runs early with 55 before being run out after Sam Gunson was stumped for 12, bringing Zak Willox to the middle, eager after his 93 against Caboolture a week earlier.

He set up the innings after Stitt and Schloss both exited on 74, again approaching three figures with 88 before edging off Tyron DeKauwe, whose three wickets matched young Ashton Muir for the Lighthouses' best.

Tewantin-Noosa captain Jake Dennien took the cautious route and gave Glasshouse a bat at Hingst Oval, with the reward the early wicket of Dan Cahill for 11.

The Rangers' batting never really got going after some minor starts to reach a semblance of adequacy at 184 only after an unbeaten 30 from Heath Fischer, his highest two-day score in 80-odd appearances for Glasshouse.

Tom Stewart joined Scott Aufderheide and Tom Freshwater to snare nine of the ten home wickets after 81 overs in a shortened day, leaving the Thunder a middling target that they have reached just twice in the last nine two-day rounds, although their last match 5/312 shows the potential.

Steve Ledger scored his tenth century for Nambour, also the club's 100th individual three-figure achievement, to set up a challenge of 234 for Coolum at the Showgrounds.

The captain's 116 was assisted by two or three starts as the Sharks' bowlers kept the Cutters in sight with Josh McLean snaring 3/25, and on a hat-trick next innings after Nambour legend Shane O'Connor, returning after 15 years to add to his 191 game, 4,074 run history, made the briefest of appearances.

Caboolture, deposed from first spot last round, made a good start for big points against Gympie when the Snakes travelled to Manthie Oval and rolled the home side for 90.

Mitchell Lee stayed near the top of the competition wicket-takers with 5/16 as the Gold turned 2/62 into a battle to avoid an outright loss.

Caboolture gave another glimpse of top order frailty to be 3/8 before captain Matt Schubert came to the rescue with 69, and at 7/137 at stumps, there remains enough time and enough inconsistency for a number of possible outcomes next Saturday.
