Toowoomba woman's pacific voyage to save the sea

SAILING from the Galapagos Islands to Easter Island may seem like a dream for many, but for one Toowoomba woman it's part of her mission to clean up the world's oceans.

Former Glennie student Katlin Tilly has been selected as part of the all-woman eXXpedition sailing team and will join the crew in February.

"The trip will bring 300 women together from all around the world," Ms Tilly said.

"By sailing across all the oceans we can gather data on exactly how much plastic pollution is impacting our natural environment.

"What this trip means to me- it's about communication on our issues. I want to raise awareness by communicating with people from Australia, America, Europe and everywhere else."

This isn't the first time Ms Tilly has gotten behind a charity operation. After completing a dual degree in Economics and Geography at The University of Queensland, she found work at a not-for-profit in the Bahamas, called The Island School.

She works there as a sustainability teacher.

"My passion for environmental protection was ignited by working for The Island School," Ms Tilly said.

"That's where I decided I wanted to dedicate my career to protecting the oceans and helping people find stronger solutions.

After making it through the competitive application process for the eXXpedition team, Ms Tilly must now raise funds.

"I can't do this alone, so I am looking for a team of people that can sponsor me and get behind this amazing program," she said.

"Sailing can bring people together in a moment where they completely depend on the natural environment and must work with it rather than against it.

"That is one of the many reasons that I strongly believe the eXXpedition round the world trip will create a legacy that will change the way we look at the environment."

Ms Tilly has started a GoFundMe page for her voyage. To donate or for sponsorship options click here
