Toowoomba reacts to news of 30 Big W closures
SINCE Big W announced it will close 30 of its stores in the next three years, there has been mixed reviews to the news.
Woolworths has not yet said which stores will be on the chopping block, and is also yet to announce how drastic the loss of jobs will be.
However Big W has confirmed its distribution centre located in Warwick will close at the end of its lease in 2023.
The closure comes as a result of the loss-making franchise taking a blow when it came to profits.
When The Chronicle asked its readers if they still shopped at Big W, from about 1000 votes, 89% of people said they did.
Many people were also quick to compare Big W to Kmart, with many people saying Kmart also had more of a variety of items for a cheaper price.
Tracey Garcia said: "Quality is about the same at both stores but Kmart is cheaper and has better presentation and marketing."
Dan Liss said: "Personally I shop at Kmart more then Big W. I find that clothing is much better quality at Kmart and it is also a little cheaper then Big W on a variety of products."
However, there were many who said Big W was the far better store and they'd be sad to see it go.
Kasey Leigh Jeet: "I like Big W for men's clothes and kids clothes. I find them better with some stuff and Kmart I find better with other stuff. Why doesn't Big W just try to step it up."
Tim Barnsley-Cooper said: "Big W has way better checkouts."
Sarah Kay-Huÿbregts said: "I think Big W has better clothing quality and sizing to be honest. But Kmart has great marketing and store presentation. Big W needs a make over."
The Woolworths Group stated details of possible store closures will not be released due to ongoing discussions with landlords and in the interim, all stores and distribution centres will continue to trade as normal.
