'He controls the money' Mum's desperate bid to break free

A TOOWOOMBA mother has been warned she's in a toxic relationship because her partner has "full control" of their finances.

The woman said she received some money to buy items but otherwise had to ask for money and permission to buy or do things.

Toowoomba women were quick to offer advice, including that the woman contact Relationships Australia.

Economic abuse

The Domestic and Family Violence Protection Act 2012 defines economic abuse as behaviour that is coercive, deceptive or unreasonably controls another without their consent and in a way that denies them economic or financial autonomy.

"The most obvious example of economic abuse is coercing a person to give up control of their assets or income," domestic violence support group Neumann & Turnour Lawyers states.

The Queensland Government's domestic and family violence states financial abuse involves: "Not giving you enough money to survive, or forcing you to hand over your money".
