Toowoomba man on 90-plus child sex charges

A TOOWOOMBA man who police claim to be a notorious child sex offender has had more charges laid against him.

Former Gatton doctor Joseph Lee Smith was once jailed in Bulgaria for child sex offences and has similar convictions in Australia.

He was remanded in custody after appearing in Toowoomba Magistrates Court in September on a single charge of using the internet to procure a child under 16.

In refusing him bail, Magistrate Robbie Davies referred to the 46-year-old’s criminal history and that police had claimed it likely he would face further charges.

Smith’s case was returned to the same court yesterday after police charged him with more than 90 further matters which included 24 counts of grooming a child under 16 years with intent to procure engagement in a sexual act, 56 counts of failing to comply with reporting obligations under the Child Protection Act, eight counts of using the internet to procure children under 16, three counts of indecent treatment of children under 16, and two counts of possessing child exploitation material.

Smith has not as yet been required to enter any pleas to the charges and he was not present in court but was represented by his lawyer.

He was originally arrested after police raided his home in September.

Police claim the 46-year-old had from his home in Toowoomba befriended a boy in Victoria via Instagram and allegedly had the boy send him images of him dancing naked.

It is alleged Smith sent the boy a gift in a parcel which the boy’s mother intercepted and contacted police.

Magistrate Damian Carroll remanded Smith in custody and adjourned the case for mention back in the same court on December 5.
