Toowoomba craft brewer takes out national beer comp

BEER brewed in a backyard shed in Highfields has taken out awards at a nation-wide competition in Brisbane.

Monty Brewing Co's Cream Ale, Hefeweizen, and Red Imperial IPA recently took out bronze awards at the prestigious Royal Queensland Food and Wine Show, much to the delight of founder and brewer Nathan Semmens.

Monty Brewing Co, headed up by Mr Semmens and his wife Valerie Chua, were up against some serious competition at the show from the likes of Balter Brewing, Burleigh Brewing Company, and other industry heavyweights.

With Mr Semmens only brewing from his backyard shed since January, Mrs Chua said it was "fantastic" to come away with three awards from six entries.

It's the first competition Mr Semmens has entered in nearly four years, Mrs Chua said.

The couple are the force behind the under-construction Range View Hotel on the New England Highway at Highfields, which will feature a restaurant, bar, bottle shop and microbrewery.

The backyard production brewery that was responsible for the award-winning beers has only been in place for a couple of months.

Mrs Chua said while their main focus was on establishing their new hotel, she and Mr Semmens were happy to win a couple of awards in order to get the Monty Brewing Co name out to the public, and work on brewing beer for the local Darling Downs community.

The couple are hoping to open the Range View Hotel by the end of this year.
