Magpies or Comets? It's somebody's time to shine

THE Blues captured the public attention but behind the scenes, the countdown to the Group 2 semi finals began in earnest.

After Sunday's smashing in Grafton, Coffs Harbour will be back on the road seeking salvation with Bellingen Oval next stop.

Bellinger Valley-Dorrigo coach Maurie Hulbert is making no rash predictions, but will go into the match with a plan to roll the Comets.

"I've really given it to the boys at training and depending on what comes up, they'll either hate me or hate losing to the other blokes," he said.

"The message is 'we wanna play and wanna win' and go for broke."

The Magpies gave Coffs a scare in round one by leading into the second half before running out of legs.

Two point losses to Woolgoolga and South Grafton made the difference between sitting near the bottom and knocking on the semi final door.

"We've had some bad luck, but the season will be one where a handful of good young kids made it into first grade," Hulbert said.

"Daniel Mitchell, Brayden O'Brien, Jai Martin and Mitchell Whitelaw have come ahead in leaps and bounds and while I'm not one for pushing under-18s before they are ready, when I ask them if they are fine to sit on the bench they 'can't wait to get there'.

"Or they come and ask me first if they can have a run.

"That's good footy attitude and shows the type of player we must have to go up the ladder."

On the downside, chief attacking weapon Matt Bush is out of tomorrow's game while Luke Rose took a heavy knock and his season may be over for good.

"We've had a bad injury run, but give the boys credit, they still give whatever they have when they get out there.

"At least I can say we have a plan to win and if Coffs turn up not at their best, who knows what might happen?"
