Time to make a change in approach to environment

ALARM bells have been sounding for decades (aeons in political cycles).

But now they are clanging like the bells of St Trinian's.

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change represents the dedicated work of tens of thousands of highly trained scientists handed up to the United Nations with their findings on how human activity has influenced, contributed to, and in many areas, is accelerating weather systems.

The basis of their findings is how physical processes are a result of humanity's economic and lifestyle excesses.

It doesn't take a genius to figure out that throat-throttling smog in Beijing comes from industries pumping massive amounts of carbon and sulphurous dioxides and other noxious gases into the outside air.

All over the world, Earth's atmosphere is treated as an open sewer in which the economic businesses dispose (dump) their waste materials.

Successive governments who are scientifically naive and business friendly have allowed this pollution to occur cost free.

Well, the clanging bells like Hurricane Michael (no relation) and other extreme weather events including tornadoes in southeast Queensland are warning us otherwise.

Serious interventions now must occur including high carbon taxes and a quicker withdrawal from coal use, say five years.
