Plenty of comments about Woolworths/Raj Mahal plan received
THE proposed Woolworths development at the dilapidated Raj Mahal site at Woolgoolga has triggered dozens of submissions as part of the approvals process.
The project has previously provoked division, with business owners concerned it would hurt them and others encouraged by its potential to boost employment in Woolgoolga.
A council spokesperson said 78 submissions were made on the proposal, with early indications that most were behind the development.
"We're still working through them currently, but there appears to be more in favour than against the proposal," the spokesperson said.
The development application is for a stand-alone supermarket, but there is also potential for a liquor licence to be granted.
"The DA incorporates an ancillary liquor component," the council spokesperson said.
"As part of the DA process, council has therefore requested a Community Impact Assessment from the proponent. Council will also be requesting comment from NSW Police."
While the liquor component will be considered by council as part of the broader application, final approval for alcohol sales is the responsibility of the Independent Liquor and Gaming Authority, which will also allow for community consultation.
