Gov't may set up cattle tick infested and tick-free zones

CATTLE ticks are in the firing line of Biosecurity Queensland.

Changes to the Queensland Biosecurity Act could have two new biosecurity zones put in place.

The government is considering establishing "infested" and "free" zones with movement limitations on animals, such as horses and cows, restricted between the areas.

Queensland Farmers Federation biosecurity spokesman Gary Sansom said the changes were not surprising.

"There has been extensive consultation regarding the changes to biosecurity legislation, so the final changes, even though not everyone will agree with them, should not come as a surprise," he said.

"There is currently a very low level of awareness among the farming community about the changes to this legislation."
