Thompson zooms off to V8 Supercars

BYRON BAY V8 Supercar driver Andrew Thompson has made his mark on the Fujitsu V8 Supercar Series by forging a 154-point break over second spot.

Thompson, who drove in the main Supercar division with the now-defunct Paul Weel Racing team in 2008, has been battling to find a permanent seat in the main series ever since but has given himself every chance with an impressive showing in the second tier.

However, he will team with top Supercar driver Jamie Whincup in the Team Vodafone Commodore VE for the V8 Supercar endurance races, which includes the prestigious Bathurst 1000 in October.

He will also contest a round of the Fujitsu Series at Bathurst.

Thompson confirmed his lead in the championship with a win in round four, over three races, at the Ipswich 300 at the weekend at the Queensland Raceway.

“I'm pretty happy with the last race but obviously disappointed with race two, as I didn't progress in the race at all,” he said.

“We had a strong qualifying car and we were pretty damn quick but it was just unfortunate we didn't quite get race one right or race two.

“We finally pieced things together for race three and walked away with a race win and an overall round win, which I can't be unhappy with, but it is now time for me to focus on the endurance races.”

Coincidentally, former Caniaba resident David Russell finished second in the round and is now second in the series behind Thompson.

Russell has also picked up an endurance seat, with Jack Daniel's Racing, pairing with top driver Todd Kelly.

The season moves to Phillip Island, Victoria, next month, before the Bathurst 1000.
