Thompson says Socceroos' spirits low in lead up to qualifier

SOCCEROOS playmaker Archie Thompson admits his team is low on morale - not a great concession given the team plays a World Cup qualifier against Japan in Saitama on Tuesday.

To make the finals of the global tournament to be played in Brazil next year, the Australians need to take at least one point from this game, before beating Jordan and Iraq next month in Melbourne and Sydney.

"It's a huge game for us, because we're a team at the moment that's probably lacking a bit of confidence," Thompson said.

"At the moment they're probably the best football country in Asia, so to get a result or to knock them off in Japan would build so much confidence in this team."

Australia was lucky to escape with a point from a disappointing 2-2 draw at home to Oman in the team's most recent qualifier, a result that left the Socceroos third in Group B, one point behind Jordan and seven back from Japan.

The Blue Samurai need just one point from either of their last two group qualification matches to become the first nation through to next year's showpiece.

The top two countries in Group B earn automatic qualification.
