ONE million dollars worth of ice seized by local police at the weekend has been described as "a drop in the ice ocean" by the command's crime manager, Detective Inspector Darren Jameson.

A 53-year-old Cabramatta man was charged after the drug was located by police following a vehicle stop on the Pacific Hwy, near North Boambee Rd, about 3am on Sunday morning.

Officers spoke to and searched the driver and his passenger, a 46-year-old man, before conducting a search of the vehicle.

During the search police allegedly seized one kilogram of crystal methylamphetamine located in the vehicle's engine bay, as well as an ice pipe and cash.

Det Insp Jameson said police intelligence led to the vehicle being stopped.

"We've been engaging in criminal interdiction strategies here in the Coffs-Clarence Local Area Command for well over twelve months," he said.

"That sees us targeting vehicles that are travelling on the Pacific Hwy or other known traffic routes, and is part of a wider strategy we call CATCH.

"Criminal interdiction looks at those who are travelling and carrying illegal items or involved in criminal offences."

The pair were travelling from Sydney to Queensland in a silver Mitsubishi ASX, which was also seized by police for forensic investigation.

"It definitely has the hallmarks of drug couriering to us and that's what we'll be alleging in court," Det Insp Jameson said.

The driver was arrested and taken to Coffs Harbour Police Station where he was charged with supplying a large commercial quantity of a prohibited drug, dealing with property suspected as proceeds of crime and possessing a prohibited drug.

He was bail refused to appear in Coffs Harbour Local Court.

The passenger was not charged however police investigations into the matter are ongoing.
