Third time lucky for Orara

HAVING lost successive grand finals to Bucca in the mid-60s, Orara finally broke through for a first grade title at their third attempt in 1967-68 where they got some revenge on Bucca in a close grand final.

After making 190 at Brelsford Park there were some fingernails bitten down to the quick as Bucca got closer and closer to the target.

John Wear followed up his four wicket haul with the ball with a score of 54 but it wasn’t enough to get Bucca over the line as they dismissed 11 runs short of Orara’s total.

Orara went in to bat again and managed to bat out time before they were dismissed for 143 to record the first premierships since Orara United won in 1954-55 and Orara won way back in 1928-29 9the summer some chap called Bradman made his Test debut for Australia).

Orara’s golden era was in the 70s and 80s when they played in eight grand finals in the space of only nine seasons for three first grade titles.
