Theft ‘beyond a joke’ for Mackay shop owners
A MACKAY couple has given food to the hungry only for the recipients to return and rob their store.
Nona Maber and her husband Sam Disa, who own TJ Mini-Mart in South Mackay, said they have had enough.
“It happens two, three, four times a week … it’s beyond a joke,” Mrs Maber said.
A man who already owed the couple money attempted to rob them last week, Mr Disa said.
“He was drunk and asked for money from the till,” he said.
Mr Disa fended off the would-be attacker with a baseball bat, only to be confronted by another four people after following the first out of the store.
A good Samaritan across the road came to his defence, Mr Disa said.
But the couple said the worst offenders were school kids and those high on drugs.
“I’m scared. I got robbed with a knife twice,” Mrs Maber said.
“They think that we’re stupid because we come from another country.”
