The unexpected place children could be most at risk

DRIVERS are being warned to take extra care as the risk of low-speed run-overs increases.

The State's peak motoring body and RACQ Careflight have issued a warning to Queenslanders to take extra care around driveways.

RACQ spokesperson Lauren Ritchie said the holiday period was a high-risk time for low-speed run-overs, especially around home driveways.

"Parents and carers need to be especially vigilant around driveways with children back at home over the school break," Ms Ritchie said.

"Research shows driveway run-overs commonly occur when young children are left unsupervised, reversing visibility is poor, when children run into the path of the vehicle, and when play areas are not separated by fences from the driveway."

RACQ Careflight Director of Clinical Operations Emmeline Finn said low speed run-overs were one of the most frequent causes of injury or death in young children.

"Our doctors are called to at least two driveway incidents every school holidays," Dr Finn said.

"Tragically, most often the driver responsible is a member of the family so it's so important that parents, grandparents and carers have proper safety precautions in place around their homes."

TIPS FOR IMPROVING DRIVEWAY SAFETY

  •  Supervise children at all times, especially in areas around vehicles.
  •  Encourage children to play in a designated area, separated from the driveway.
  •  If you are the only adult at home, take the child with you when moving your vehicle.
  •  Walk around the rear of your vehicle before getting into the driver's seat.
  •  Consider installing rear visibility cameras or sensors to assist in reducing blind spots, but don't rely solely on technology.
