The Puppet People call the Big Banana home

IT'S Coffs Harbour's newest big tourist attraction – but there are strings attached.

The Puppet People have one of the biggest ranges of puppets available in Australia and have set up shop at the Big Banana.

The only other comparable shop is in The Rocks, Sydney.

Owners Amanda and Mike White are passionate about puppets and have been selling them at markets for the last two years.

When the shopfront at the Big Banana came up for lease, they couldn't let the opportunity pass.

Mike said the location couldn't be better because the puppet shop is a unique tourist attraction.

“People are always very surprised ... once they're in here they love it,” he said.

“We have hand puppets, marionettes and finger puppets.

“All our puppets are of the highest quality and are designed by some of the USA's leading designers.”

Mike said puppetry has become a neglected art in Australia.

“Fifty years ago a lot of families had puppets. Now entertainment is electronic.

“Puppets stimulate children's imaginations because they have to make up what the puppet says and the voices.”

Mike is a self-taught puppeteer and says working them isn't the hard part - making the script up is.

“We're planning to do puppet shows after we get through the tourist season,” he said.

  • The Puppet People shopfront is located just above the candy shop at the Big Banana. For more information phone 6652 9755.
