The Good Guys on fire

MACKAY boat The Good Guys swept all before it in round four of the Australian Offshore Superboat Championships at Redcliffe.

Piloted by brothers Chris and Brendan Frier, The Good Guys continued its dominance of the Supercat 1000 Class.

In doing so, the Friers extended their overall lead after four rounds of the 2011 series.

But it was not all plain sailing for the Mackay team.

"We had a few dramas with some of our documentation that we have to have for the racing on the Saturday," Brendan Frier said.

"So we missed out on pole and the practice on Saturday.

"The documentation that we didn't have up to speed wouldn't allow us to compete on the Saturday.

"But we got all that sorted."

An early morning trip to the Gold Coast enabled the Friers to undertake some extra testing, which was required to allow them to race.

"So we went into the race on Sunday dead-last on pole, with no chance to change gearing or anything like that from the Saturday," Frier said.

"We went in there a little bit blind-sided, but we still pulled it off, so it was definitely a good result considering the rest of it that came along with it.

"We knew what had to be done," he said.

"But in saying that we were still a little bit wary if we were geared right and what the other boats were going to be like against us because they all had that extra day on the water."

The Good Guys completed the weekend in second place on the Aus1 Championship leaderboard, behind Class One boat Maritimo.

They are well within striking distance over the next two rounds.

"With bigger motors than us, they're always going to win their class," Frier said.

"Depending if they have engine difficulties or something like that, it gives us a chance to go on and take the Aus1 out."

Frier said the last two meetings were the biggest of the series.

"Being one weekend after each other, if anything happens to the boat on the first weekend of racing it's going to be a mad rush to try to get things ready for the following weekend," he said.

"So it's sort of a snowball effect if anything goes wrong on the first weekend."
