Under-18’s rep squad finalised

SELECTORS have finalised the 17-man Group 2 under-18 squad to contest the Oxley Pioneers selection trials in Tamworth next Saturday.

Coach Peter Barrett said he decided to cut the travelling party back by one player after Macleay Valley forward Linc Callaghan was forced to withdraw due to changing residence to the Gold Coast.

“It’s a bit far to bring him from Burleigh Heads to play two short games of footy and besides, he’ll be looking for a new club up there,” he said.

“Also, we’ve decided to go with a squad of 17 as I don’t want to take the kids up to Tamworth and then be forced to tell one of them he won’t get a run.

“If we get an injury, they’ll have to knuckle down and we’ll see what they’re made of.”

The original squad lacked strike power out wide and selectors made their choices after watching Saturday’s first round of official trials.

All four incoming players are outside backs and all have first-grade experience.

Final training and a strategy meeting is set down for Allen Gillett Oval, Macksville, at 5.45pm next Wednesday.
