The bounce that changed everything

SOMETIMES you just need a little luck.

Ask Schae Mawer, he will tell you.

Boasting a slender four-point advantage and having fended off wave after wave of Brothers attacks, Souths appeared to be hanging on for full time with 20 minutes to play in today's A-Grade minor semi-final.

That was until a skied kick deep into Brothers territory landed on its point, and bounced at right angles away from fullback Matthew Skaife and into the waiting arms of a grateful Mawer.

Mawer raced away untouched to score under the posts and give the Sharks some much-needed breathing room.

He put the icing on the 26-12 win two minutes from full time with a try in the opposite corner to seal the gritty victory.

Sharks coach Wayne Barnett thanked Lady Luck for her role in Mawer's first try, but was quick to claim an age-old adage.

"Luck plays a part, but I think you also have to make your own luck,” Barnett said.

"If Schae hadn't pushed on that ball on the inside he wouldn't have been there to get that bounce.

"Part of our plan was to kick to Skaife high and try to get it on the ground - it worked for us there.”

Barnett pointed to separate play in the first half, when a pinpoint Beau Dixon kick found Jahleel Doolah in a mile of space only for the ball to bounce dead.

"Any other day that bounces straight into Jahleel's hands, instead it bounces dead,” Barnett said with a grin.

"You have to make your own luck. Turn up on every play.

"Is it luck, or is it just hard work?

Ultimately, it was the Sharks' willingness in defence that won them the match according to their coach.

"A bit of grit and toughness in defence I think,” Barnett said.

"They had multiple opportunities with the ball but we decide to turn up and do the little things we've been asking for in previous weeks.”
