Thanks given for neighbourhood volunteers' help

VOLUNTEERS at George Street Neighbourhood Centre were celebrated yesterday with a morning tea.

Anna McKee was presented with a bunch of flowers and thanked for her work at the centre.

Ms McKee said she volunteered to give back to the community.

"I'm looking for work at the moment so it fills in my day and gives me something to do while helping other people," she said.

"I do admin, a lot of photo-copying, scanning, emailing, just helping out in the office and with events that come up."

Ms McKee said she had been volunteering at the neighbourhood centre for about a year now and even if she got a job would hope to combine it with her volunteer work.

"It helps people in the community, people need food vouchers and that sort of thing and I've been in that boat before so it's important to help out," she said.

George Street Neighbourhood Centre service co-ordinator Helen Jansen said the centre had about 60 active volunteers on its database but could always do with more.

"They are crucial to our operations here at George Street. Without them we would have more stressed staff and be over-worked than what we actually are," she said.

To volunteer at George Street, phone 4957 2626.

National Volunteers Week runs until this Sunday.
