Teens charged over assault of off-duty police officer

TWO teenagers have been charged over the alleged assault of an off-duty police officer in Bellingen.

Just after midnight on Saturday, a male off-duty police officer was approached by two men outside a hotel on Hyde St.

The pair asked the man cigarette and allegedly became aggressive when he declined.

The assailants then allegedly assaulted the man, causing him to fall to the ground.

They fled the area and emergency services were alerted.

The off-duty officer was taken to Bellingen Hospital where he was treated for injuries to his face, head and legs.

Officers from Coffs/Clarence Local Area Command arrested a 19-year-old man nearby.

The man was taken to Coffs Harbour Police Station where he was charged with affray.

He was bailed to appear at Bellingen Local Court on September 9.

Following further inquiries, a 15-year-old male was arrested at a home in Bellingen later that day.

He was charged with assault police officer in execution of duty, common assault and affray and was bailed to appear at a children's court on September 9.
