Cramsie serves it up to heroes
TWO-time national bodyboarding champion Lachlan Cramsie toppled two of his idols with his runner-up performance at the Coopers Knights Beach Pro in South Australia last weekend.
The Mooloolaba 16-year-old beat the Gold Coast's Mitch Rawlins, a 10-year veteran of the sport, in the quarter finals and surpassed Dave Winchester, a previous winner of the Knights Pro, in the semi-finals.
Rawlins had beaten Cramsie the weekend before at the Shed 9 Victorian Pro.
Although Cramsie eventually went down to mentor Andrew Lester in the finals, his dominant performance over bodyboarding legends propelled him to his best number yet, eighth, on the Australasia Pro Tour rankings.
In the Knights Beach Pro final, Cramsie opened with two solid mid-range scores, landing a big backflip to seemingly put Lester on the ropes.
The tour veteran showed his experience in answering back with two waves of his own, landing a solid invert and riding out of the turbulence to the cheers of the crowd.
In a combo situation, Cramsie landed a huge roll to get an eight-point ride, but time was the enemy and he was unable to surpass his mentor.
The win made Lester one of only two surfers to win the Knights Beach Pro twice - the other was Winchester - having won it first in 2007.
Lester was quick to pay tribute to his tough challenger.
"It's been a while between drinks for me," he said.
"Lachlan is such a talent. He was a part of the training camp I held last year and he was head and shoulders above everyone else."
Cramsie is back on the Sunshine Coast, preparing for a competition at Wurtulla this weekend before returning to the tour for the final event at Kiama, in New South Wales, from October 20-23.
"Both Mitch and Andrew were really tough challenges. They're always good to surf with," Cramsie said.
In Cramsie's semi against Winchester, he dropped in late to a thick tube and came out of the spit with a roll to score 9.83 out of a possible 10 and leave the crowd on their feet.
Cramsie looks likely to finish in the top 10 of the tour.
