Teen hooks car in tree down cliff

NOT even driving off a cliff could stop a 17-year-old Doon Doon girl from sitting her Year 12 exams.

The teenage driver found herself in a precarious position about noon yesterday after losing control of her Toyota Prado on the Doon Doon Road, Murwillumbah Police Sergeant Bill Henry said.

“The vehicle veered across to the right-hand side of the road, going down a virtual cliff,” Sgt Henry said.

“(The 4WD) got hooked in a tree near the top.”

The Tweed District Rescue Squad, Kunghur Rural Fire Service and Westpac Life Saver Rescue Helicopter attended the crash.

“She remained in the vehicle until the rescue people got there.”

A rescue helicopter spokeswoman said the 4WD was chained to the back of the fire truck so it would not go further down the embankment.

“The woman sustained no injuries and was helped out of her car from rescue crews, she held on to the rope and walked up the embankment on to solid land.”

Sgt Henry said the teenager remained calm and colleted during the rescue.

“Her mother came to get her and she went off to do her HSC (Higher School Certificate).”
