Teacher admits sex with boy

A FORMER Coffs Harbour high school teacher, who pleaded guilty to an historic child sex charge, has been spared jail.

Mark Roberts, 44, was convicted in the Coffs Harbour District Court of a gross act of indecency involving a person under 18 and possession of child pornography.

The former Coffs Coast resident, who now lives on the Gold Coast, worked at a local high school before his arrest in 2009. The court heard that Roberts had an unlawful relationship with a 14-year-old boy in Armidale between 1990 and 1991.

At the time he was studying at university.

The victim, who is now aged 36, reported the matter to police two years ago, after he was contacted by Roberts.

The court heard both men were living in Coffs Harbour at the time.

Police conducted a raid on a Jarrett St address in September, 2009, uncovering images which they allege portrayed child pornography.

Appearing before Judge Nicholson yesterday, Roberts was handed a 12-month suspended sentence and ordered to serve a two-year section 9 good behaviour bond. Roberts' name was added to the child sex offender's register.
