Tastes of Lockyer showcases valley

LOCKYER Valley producers are cooking up something very special this weekend.

The inaugural “Tastes of the Lockyer” market day will be held on Sunday at the Lockyer Valley Cultural Centre in Gatton, featuring fresh and tasty food from producers throughout the valley.

Lockyer Valley Regional Council Tourism Portfolio chief Janice Holstein said the market day already had many mouths watering.

“So far we have had lots of interest and taken numerous inquiries about the event, and everything is pointing to a great day,” Cr Holstein said.

Celebrity guests at Tastes of the Lockyer will include former Australian cricket legend and food-lover Matthew Hayden and Brett's Wharf chef Alastair McLeod, of Ready, Steady, Cook fame.

“Mr Hayden has certainly carved out a career for himself as a lifestyle guru and to have him cook two dishes on the day will be a major drawcard,” Cr Holstein said.

Lockyer Valley Mayor Steve Jones said he was pleased to see such strong support for the event.

“This is a perfect opportunity for local producers to get the message out there that the Lockyer Valley is back to doing what it does best, and that is producing fresh, flavoursome produce,” Cr Jones said.

“It is free for all fresh food and produce stall holders to come along and sell their produce, and I would encourage them to get involved in what will be a big day.”

The market day will kick off at 10am and finish at 3pm and will feature pony rides, a jumping castle, balloon giveaways and colouring in competitions for the kids.
