WHAT began as a hobby after losing his job has become an all-consuming miniature urban sprawl threatening to swallow its creator's life whole.

On display at the Lismore Regional Gallery for the next month, Tasmanian model-maker Warren Thomas' extraordinary BoxWorld is truly a sight to behold.

“I'm ever so grateful to be asked to come to beautiful Lismore,” said the wide-eyed semi-retiree who is looking for ‘real work'.

“I've been working on it for 12 years now and the kids love it ... when they come in they go ‘wicked'.”

“Mind you, there are times I've been sick to death of it, but then I get fired up and do some more.

“What you're looking at is one-third of the whole – the whole model is literally the size of a tennis court.

After visiting a Lego exhibition with his kids years ago, Mr Thomas was inspired to follow suit.

“I couldn't afford Lego, so I started using milk cartons and cornflake packets,” he said.

“First it was one building, then a street, then a block, and it just kept on going.”

Mr Thomas said he was married, but when asked if the project had anything to do with the split he laughed: “It didn't help.”

“I used to embarrass my poor wife. We'd be walking down the street after the movies and there'd be a dump bin and she'd always go ‘please don't', before I jumped in.”
