Tail-ender not to be neglected warns Cutters coach

RUGBY LEAGUE: The Under-20 Cutters have one last chance to make sure all gears are turning before they are put in the hot seat.

Come next week the young Cutters will be dropped into the instant elimination rounds of the Hastings Deering Colts finals.

In the last regular round the Mackay squad comes up against Redcliffe Dolphins, the third lowest team in the competition.

Still, Cutters coach Michael Comerford said the dead rubber would have an echoing effect on their finals run.

"It's a pretty proud footy club there, so they'll be doing everything in their power to upset us in the last regular round of the season,” he said.

"When you play a game where the stakes aren't high you can fall into a slow, boring game of football.

"Knowing that, we still need to step it up. We're going to play with as much intensity as we can.”

The Mackay coach said his men who had picked up a weakness in their defence in the last few rounds and the Redcliffe match would be their last chance to ensure they had sealed the weakness.

"In the last few games we've gone out to a big lead and then conceded a couple of quick tries,” Comerford said.

"The boys identified that themselves. We can't be happy to score a couple and let a few in. We need to make sure we keep that resilience throughout the game.”

The Cutters hold a slim chance of breaking into the top four and gaining the one loss buffer that comes with it; but it would take the Sunshine Coast Falcons failing against Ipswich Jets.

After his Cutters toppled the Jets by 34 points last week, Comerford said he would not hold his breath for such a long shot.

"Looking at the way we play is more important, opposed to the scoreboard.”
