TAFE graduates all at sea

SIX months of Marine Studies at North Coast TAFE’s Coffs Harbour Campus has opened up opportunities two former students never thought were possible.

Crystal Tredinnick-Dawson and Liam Pethebridge recently completed a field study trip to the Heron Island Research Station.

After completing their Certificate III in Marine Studies in 2007, Ms Tredinnick-Dawson and Mr Pethebridge went on to further Marine Science studies with Southern Cross University.

“The TAFE course provided a good overall introduction to marine science and potential career opportunities in the industry,” Ms Tredinnick-Dawson said.

“The teachers were all so enthusiastic and approachable and the subjects covered were full of practical and useful information. We established our own aquariums on campus to monitor and enjoy and took a field trip to the marine museum near Kingscliff which was very rewarding.

“What we gained at TAFE gave us a really good head start to Uni studies, including credit for three units which saved us some money.”

In order to include the required units of study for NSW Maritime General Purpose Deckhand certification, the Marine Studies course is now part of the Certificate III in Transport & Distribution – Maritime Operations training package. The course also provides WorkCover accredited first aid training.
