Sweet success for river care group

THE combined efforts of Orara Valley RiverCare Group have seen a constant flow of success since they formed a committee in 1996.

Their latest achievement was in the NSW Northern Region LandCare Awards where the committee won the Community Group category for their ongoing rehabilitation of the Orara River.

The Orara Valley RiverCare Groups Management Committee is a collaboration between Cochrans Pool Urumbilum Rivercare Group, Karangi Landcare Group and Nana Glen Landcare Group. The committee gets funding from the Coffs Harbour City Council Environmental Levy, the Northern Rivers Catchment Management Authority, as well as numerous environmental grants, the latest of which focuses on the Bucca Bucca Creek and around Nana Glen.

Landholders involved in the rehabilitation project participate in site assessment and planning, stock management and weed control to allow natural regeneration of natives. Currently 90 landholders, whose properties cover 80km along the Orara River, Urumbilum River and Bucca Bucca Creek, are working to reinforce native vegetation corridors and protect rivers from the impact of erosion and farm runoff.

The committee invites the community to visit a revegetation site at the Urumbilum River, before heading to the Upper Orara Recreation Group for practical, local tree planting advice. The workshop will cover seasonal considerations, planting techniques and weed control and free plants will be given to Orara River landholders.

The event will run from 9.30am to 12noon on Friday April 8. RSVP by 5pm April 7 by ringing Sandy Eager on 6648 4000.
