Swans senior no-show a bombshell for AFL

COFFS Swans dropped a bombshell during the week when they advised the league executive that they would not send a senior side to Port Macquarie this weekend.

Club spokesman Alan Clayton advised the club was financially sound and had strong under-18 and reserve sides but had been unable to secure quality recruits for the senior team in 2013.

Some recent long-term injuries have also compounded their situation.

There are now doubts about the club's ability to continue with a senior side this season.

The league is awaiting a full report from club officials.

Clayton said that the Swans remained upbeat about 2014 and already had feelers out to recruit key playing personnel and fully intended to reinstate a senior team as soon as possible.

This is a major concern for the league to see one of the foundation clubs in crisis.

The failure to field a team will no doubt dominate discussions within the local AFL circles in the coming weeks.
